I did not hear of J. R. R. Tolkien until University in late 90's as I was more into Star Trek and Star Wars. Curiosity about questions I had from watching the Peter Jackson movies led me to the books. I have read the Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings at least 3 times each and Beren and Luithen once.
I have the audiobooks for the Silmarillion (Martin Shore?), Hobbit (by Rob Inglis), and LotR (by Rob Inglis) and have listened to them at least 4 times each, among others, while I work and drive. They are all excellent and I highly recommend them.
A compulsion to understand what was happening in the Silmarillion cause me to map out an Elven and Men family tree, of sorts, and to map out a Timeline of Arda/Middle Earth compiled from the books and other resources like The Encyclopedia of Arda and The LOTR Wiki.
I do have a good deal of building experience in Minecraft since v1.2.5 and have even helped build a version of Helm's Deep on a friend's server along with other massive projects including the 7 Ancient Wonders of the World to scale, except for the Great Pyramid of Giza as it would have been too large to see off of the server. The largest single build I led would be a scale replica of Lincoln Cathedral, including the old spires.
