In Progress RPG Development

  • Minecraft Middle Earth is a Minecraft community that recreates the world described by JRR Tolkien and his writings. Everyone can participate in organized events in which we collaborate to create major landmarks, terrain, caves, castles, towns, farms and more.

To get started, visit The New Player Guide
  • This weekend 20-21 April the website will be unavailable for a few hours for a scheduled upgrade and maintenance. Estimated time that the site will be unavailable will be around 3 hours.

  • This community does not generate revenue and relies on its members and financial contributors to keep it running.

For a complete month, we would need around 235 USD for a break-even situation.

Who I am -

What's up guys, some of you may know me as Syriafr, but I've recently changed my name to KinkySauron. I recently joined the team of developers here at MCME, and I presented my RPG idea to some of the leading staff members here, needless to say, they all seemed to like it ;). So I, along with Eriol, have decided to begin putting together a much more detailed platform that we can begin to develop. I joined MCME as an Adventurer in late February, and just recently achieved the rank of Commoner. With intros aside, I look forward to working with MCME on awesome builds, plugins, and of course... this RPG project. - Enjoy :) -

Opening Statement -

We're proud to finally announce that MCME is going to begin the development of an RPG Gamemode. The essential idea behind this gamemode is to recreate Middle-Earth's economy in a unique and enjoyable manner.

Spawning In -

Players spawn into a lobby where they get to choose their initial side and rank. In this lobby they can choose to join the light side, where you focus on being the world's "hero" and finishing quests successfully. Players could also choose to join the dark side, where their objective is to conquer the world, constantly stopping quests & battle light players.

Light players begin in safe areas, depending on the rank they choose:

Hobbits begin in the Shire.
Men begin in Minas Tirith.
Elves begin in Mirkwood.
Wizards begin in Fangorn Forest.
Dwarves begin in Erebor.
Dark Wizards begin in Isengard.
Uruk Hai & Orcs begin in the Udun Valley of Mordor.
Goblins begin in the depth of the abandoned kingdom of Moria.

Ranks -

City Ranks:

Traveler - This is the rank you receive when you initially spawn into the game. Travelers are able to scavenge the map for money, resources, etc. Once they gain a certain amount of money, they can purchase a house in a city and rankup to specialist ($1000)

Specialist - Specialist is the rank that follows Traveler. Players with the specialist rank receive access to all of the public features of the town/city they reside in (i.e food banks, bathhouses, medical centers, etc.) Ranking up to soldier costs $1500 without any requirements.

Soldier - Soldier is the rank that follows Specialist. Players with the rank of soldier receive access to the city armory, as well as free housing in the barracks. Soldiers are required to heed the calls for battle of their officers, captains, lords, and kings. Soldiers can rankup to officer after serving in 5 battles and paying $5000.

Officer - Officer is the rank that follows soldier. Players with the rank of officer have the ability to lead groups of soldiers and receive a certain sector in the army that they have full control of.
Officers receive access to a much more “OP” barrack. They are also given access to fancier living quarters.

Captain - Captain is the rank that follows officer. Players with this rank have the ability to control multiple sectors in the army. Captains gain access to a private and free house in the military sector of their city. They receive access to top notch weaponry and armor. Ranking up from Captain to lord requires you to apply to the king for the rank, you’re also required to pay $10000 tribute to the government.

Lord - Lord is the rank that follows Captain. Players with this rank have the ability to lead the entire army of the king. A king can only appoint 10 Lords at a given time. The lords reside in the castle and have access to everything in the castle (with the exception of the king's quarters).

King - The king of a city is the person that found the Ring of that city. The king has access to everything within his city. The king has a secret set of very overpowered armor in his quarters. The king can lead the armies of his city and even call upon the aid of other armies within his kingdom (Gondor calls for aid!).

Worldwide Ranks:

Light ranks:

Elf - Elves should be unable to lose hunger, they take no fall damage, have infinite speed 1, and a “charge and dash” ability.

Wizard - Wizards begin with access to basic spells. The more they use those spells, the more credit they gain. Credits can be used to rankup their spells and become stronger wizards. Wizards do not lose hunger. They also have Fire Resistance 1

Man - Men have strength 1, Leaping 1, and Regeneration 1. They have a “Strength Slam” ability where they charge their blade up, knocking everything within a 4x4 area up and dealing increased damage with their next hit.

Hobbit - Hobbits have infinite speed 2, leaping 1, and the ability to go invisible for a total of 5 minutes every hour.

Dwarf - Dwarves have Haste 2, Strength 1, increased damage when using axes, and looting 2 on all tools they use.

Dark Ranks:

Dark wizard - Dark Wizards begin with access to basic spells. The more they use those spells, the more credit they gain. Credits can be used to rankup their spells and become stronger wizards. Wizards do not lose hunger. They also have Fire Resistance 1

Uruk Hai - Uruk Hai have strength 2, resistance 2, a charged roar that knocks surrounding entities back, and a charged sword attack.

Orc - Orcs have strength 1, resistance 1, speed 1, and a charged sword attack.

Goblin - have infinite speed 2, leaping 1, and the ability to go invisible for a total of 5 minutes every hour.

Ranking Up -

Climbing the ranks is no easy task... in order to gain access to the rank system you must first purchase a home in a city. You can only purchase a home in a city that belongs to your race (wizards can purchase a home anywhere.) You can earn money by completing jobs, boss battles, or quests. You can also FIND money in abandoned kingdoms or mines (this is a dangerous choice, don't venture alone.)

Objectives -

The initial objective of all light players is to travel to the fields of Udun, retrieve the "End Ring" from the fields, and destroy it in Mount Doom. Every time the ring is destroyed there is a 1-hour cooldown before it respawns. Traveling to retrieve the ring is no easy task. As soon as a player accepts the quest, the Nasgul of Sauron are notified and they begin hunting the party affiliated. Along your journey to Mordor, you will face challenging forces, you may be raided or battled by a dark player/army, you may end up veering into an uncharted area and facing a terrible boss battle. Yet there is still hope for these great heroes... They have the ability to gather guilds, armies, or even entire Kingdoms. Players can form a guild consisting of any amount of players (with a configurable maximum) to go on this quest or any other quest or adventure. Guilds work in a similar fashion to factions. Gathering guilds costs a lot, and the journey is tiring. Gathering armies can only be done by a player that achieves the rank of captain+. On your journey throughout the world, you may cross several dangers. Some waters are poisinous, some trees can throw you into the air, Some caves may lead to spider nests. All mobs in the world are enhanced to be a bigger challenge. Once you retrieve the ring, your quest is complete and you can play again from a different POV.

Rings of Power -

Each city has a specific ring tied to that cities race. Whoever picks up this city's ring becomes the city's king for a 2 week duration, with access to all the powers of that ring. During these 2 weeks, that player cannot remove the ring from their inventory or give it to anyone else. 1 dark player can also find a ring in Mordor, this ring is far more powerful than any of the other rings, this player leads the armies of Dark players.

Cities -
Cities are divided into several areas: Residential, Military, Royal, Public, Market, and Recreational.

Residential - Residential areas are where players can purchase/rent homes.

Military - This is where soldiers reside, the barracks and officer homes are also here.

Royal - The lords and kings of a city reside here.

Public - This is where you can find bathhouses, parks, libraries, etc.

Market - Imports & Exports happen here. Players can also purchase shops to sell items here. This is where players purchase most of their items from.

Recreational - In recreational areas, you can find pubs, smoke houses, and entertainment facilities.

Most cities have a black market and underground dark market. ;)

I hope you all enjoy, please comment with any ideas you may have, thanks :)

I really love this idea, but is this idea a long term one and not going to happen for a while, as most of these places haven't even been created yet.

Yes of course, it'll definitely take us while to finish making this.

So who will work on this? I've noticed there are some new developers like you and Syria; is there like a developer team asked to work on it?
I am syriafr, and no as of right now it's just Eriol and I, that's why i'm saying it's going to take a while.

A pretty awesome idea, I do have a question though. When this is implemented (I know it'll be a while), will this be on a different server than the normal 'build' server?

Yep, that's the plan. We'll let people that enjoy building to continue building while a seperate world (exact copy of the build world) is used for this.

Isn't better to have a sort of beta of it, with like one one race for faction? (like humans and orcs/goblins) and releasing more faction time to time when both buildings/locations have been made?

We may end up doing this, but it all depends on how quickly we can finish developing this. :)

So you're taking MCME and makes a MCMMOMERPG out of it? I like it.
One tips though make sure that you test it very thoroughly.

Seeing as you get to choose from different races with different buffs depending on the side you choose it could easily be so that one side is slightly more advantageous and thus more people might choose that side over the other, leaving that other side with both weaker and fewer players.

A good example of this is the game Heroes and Generals. It's a multiplayer first person strategy shooter based on real life WWII where you play as either an US soldier or an Nazi trooper along with hundreds of other players to capture strategic positions in dozens of various battlefields. Now the problem is that the Nazis had slightly superior guns (as they did in real life, generally speaking) than the Americans which led to meny people choosing to fight on the Nazis' side which . By the time I started playing 83% of all players were playing on the Nazi side and the few players that played as Americans were playing with odds like 34 players vs 166 players at best, whilst also having inferior gear.

You have the same scenario in LotR but with an even greater power gap. The dark forces are much stronger (to inflict fear in the readers) but the good wins anyways (because they're the good guys). However in a MMO scenario there is no pre decided victor so the side that fights best would win. Now I'm not saying that you should make both sides equal in all but name, I just want to point out the importance of game balance.

Now, Heroes and Generals and MCMMOMERPG might be rather different in both gameplay and comunity so you may not face the same problem. But I still wish that you try to hold game balance high in mind regardless.

Also I really hope that that money is in in-game currency and not real USD.

Except for those concerns I love the idea of it and can't wait to try it out (because you are going to give us test versions to try out before it's 100% complete and everything is implemented, right?)
I have an idea although it might not work. Do you think it would be possible to implement instsnces of sieges? With siege towers and battering rams etc?
Also, will you alter the map as well? Like make the battlements of certain places more pvp friendly and add more random camps, ruins, caves etc.?

So, there was some controversy on this and my my mind is kind of set on an abstract balance. I wanted to make it where one race on the Light side would be powerful during the earlier phases of gameplay, and one, or several, races stronger in later phases (Same for dark side). For instance, when a new person spawns in under the race of men, he is stronger than a new wizard. Over time, a wizard becomes stronger than a man. There will be a race equal to men from the dark side as well, let's say uruk Hai for instance, when they spawn in, they're stronger than dark wizards and equal to men in strength. Hopefully, that clears things up :)

lso I really hope that that money is in in-game currency and not real USD.
Yea, of course, I'm trying to keep this as free-to-play as possible. We'll probably add a few cosmetics just to create a donor feature somewhere in there.

Except for those concerns I love the idea of it and can't wait to try it out (because you are going to give us test versions to try out before it's 100% complete and everything is implemented, right?)
We'll probably release a beta before we launch yes :)

Small alterations to the map will be necessary of course, but we're gonna try to keep it as similar to the "authentic" map as possible. Since a lot of the terrain is rather bland, and just, well....terrain, we'll probably have to add ruins that don't associate with the lore just to make things more exciting.
Sieges will definitely be a thing, it'll remain up to the leaders of each side as to wether or not they want to run sieges, but yes they will be there. Now, we may at some point decide to run a siege type event, similar to the one held a few years back
Feel free to ask any more questions or present other ideas guys :)
