    The Philosophy of Roads

because of obvious limitations what needs to be represented is the overall state of the road. overall most roads are maintained to at least some level, particularly ones which are well travelled in peaceful areas.

here's an example of what i'm talking about: <uploading screenshots doesn't seem to work> i was going to show how it's nigh impossible to tell from the screenshots what it is that i'm trying to point out. but even just trying to upload the screenshots generates an error. even if it worked...

Finished Misty Mountains [Part 1 - Mountains of Moria]

how about allowing everyone to have access to place a specially textured block for marking things? if they put too many, they'd be easily reverted. and if it's a non-solid block, not even an entire block sprite, it's unlikely to get in the way or mess anything up in any way. all in all though...

yes, following the footprints from the shire, and taking the high road from rivendell into the misty mountains.

    The Philosophy of Roads

The main thing i saw which prompted this rant was basically wandering along here and here, coming over some small rise, seeing the road ahead of me on the next hill, and realising that i could take a straight shot to get there and it would be just as easy or easier than the curvy path that was...

i would do screens but there are just too many places really. i mean, i might anyway but it's horribly inefficient. can't i just plop down some markers when i'm at the places?

    The Philosophy of Roads

I did a longer post that spells out more of my reasons here: http://www.mcmiddleearth.com/threads/artist-builder-feedback.164/page-4 I agree that aesthetics has a role to play, but that cannot be at the expense of suspension of disbelief or it's counter-productive.

i'm banned from it and i've never even been there before. how does that work?

Finished Misty Mountains [Part 1 - Mountains of Moria]

roads can be not-straight as bombur mentioned but there are loads of places where people would have cut across a valley or run along a mountain instead of over it, things like that. on the large scale you can always imagine there used to be a village or something, but on the smaller scale a road...

Finished Misty Mountains [Part 1 - Mountains of Moria]

there are a few places i noticed along the roads in the misty mountains where the roads simply wouldn't be built that way because there's a much easier, more direct way. i'd like to mark them out for whoever does the work to take a look at. how can i do that?
