The Expeditious Eradication of The MCME Chat Censor

Introduction

Friends of MCME, today, I would like to expose the significant impediments and issues produced by the server’s new chat censorship plugin. This addition to the server’s moderation toolkit has only brought harm to the beloved community of MCME. Indubitably, the interactions between server members and the first impressions of new players are negatively influenced by the censor, despite its attempts to turn the server into a safe, family-friendly environment.

Section 1: Downsides of Chat Censorship

Article I - Freedom of expression
The power and impact of certain words are often determined by the circumstances of their use and the ferocity of the words themselves. When people are restricted from exploring different, yet more engaging, ways of generating conversation, their words become boring, repetitive, and unenthusiastic. For this reason, people often utilize expletives to accentuate language that might otherwise inadequately convey their intended intensity of emotion. The ability to express emotion is much more limited in a text chat than it is in a face-to-face conversation, due to the absence of body language and voice volume. The censorship of swear words in chat further regulates one’s articulation, which results in repetitious and monotonous interactions. This issue has unequivocally damaged the dialogue between players on MCME. Furthermore, when veteran members return for a nostalgic taste of the polychromatic and luscious community that they poured their heart into years ago, they are completely flabbergasted by this major change in accepted chat protocol. Additionally, players who have remained dedicated to the server over the past several years find such a sudden and disruptive change to be absolutely repulsive.

Article II - Hindrance of server progress
The negative effects of the chat censor range beyond connections between players. Server progress is diminished to a great extent. Firstly, the obstruction of expression, as described in Article I, harms the quality of enjoyment that builders can experience whilst collaborating on various projects. Reduced levity for designers, foremen, and artists gives precedence to a lack of motivation. Thus, server progress suffers. Secondly, designers often employ vulgar tactics as a means of encouraging their workers. Without this extra push from project leads, plots remain unfinished, jobs remain unplanned, and the player count dwindles. Additionally, the lack of freedom in chat pushes players to type in discord text chats rather than on the actual Minecraft server, which leads to a growth in the discord community rather than an increase in players who are actually interested in playing on the server. Is this really what Management would like to encourage? Often, new players are drawn into the MCME community through discussions that occur in serverchat, but, when fewer people talk in this chat, these adventurers are oblivious to an integral component of MCME’s success, the community. The plethora of diverse perspectives, experiences, and opinions of the people who actively peruse the builds and events that the server has to offer are what ultimately attract and retain players. Many new players, empowered by the effervescent people of MCME, proceed to become builders or, seldom, guides, and continue to contribute towards the server’s main goal. However, without proper server activity and sociability within chat, the number of new artist applicants will decline, and the project will die before reaching completion.

Section 2: Rebuttal of Pro-Censor Arguments

Article I - Insufficient moderation capability
While the censor blocks most curse words, one can avoid the censor with astonishing ease. A player wanting to bypass the censor can do so by adding a space, period, underscore, or any other character between the letters of an outlawed word. Moreover, players who wish to use a blocked word will do so whether there’s a censor or not, especially when the censor is lacking in effectiveness. This eliminates the argument that the censor reduces Moderator responsibility, because they have to stay diligent in punishing those who purposefully bypass the censor. Surprisingly, there have been zero instances in which moderators have dissuaded players from circumventing the censor. If there’s going to be a censor, shouldn’t the blockage of certain words be enforced such that players can’t type them in any way, shape, or form? If that’s not the case, there is no logical reason to have such a low quality censor in the first place. Another problem with the chat censor is that its selection of banned words has been deemed unorthodox by several players. For example, it blocks the word “racist”, but not “homophobic”. It prevents players from typing the word “kill”, but it couldn’t care less if “slaughter”, “massacre”, “eliminate”, or “terminate” were uttered in chat. These discrepancies transform the censor from a somewhat reasonable addition into a complete laughingstock. The players of MCME find it ridiculous that the word “kill” should be blocked on a server that has PvP and that aims to recreate a world in which wars routinely take the lives of thousands. Furthermore, profanity is only blocked when it’s in English, so curse words in other languages are not detected. Shockingly, some English words aren’t blocked in specific circumstances, as shown by the example below.

AD_4nXe-ps3vdfypuo480yi8msdK3L6qHnGZP4jujH9LNNujfRK_TIuSz_3nPivlpIzzqwKQIQuJ3nVOdQnHnJGlIU-1a1EtOfvj3busV6VxW85Cyq-HRbGWimGiOAsbTjgIrDiZHRjU

The failures of the current chat censor are apparent. In fact, unpalatable speculations may emanate from the censoring of the word “kill”, and people can be easily misunderstood. For example, if someone says “Come try to kill me in the arena”, their sentence will be transformed into “Come try to **** me in the arena”, which could be interpreted to mean something completely different. Similarly, when someone types, “Wow! You’re great at PvP! A natural born killer.” The censor turns their sentence into “Wow! You’re great at PvP! A natural born ****er,” which can lead to numerous incorrect assumptions about what that person is trying to say.

Article II - Moderators not benefited by censor
Due to several of the censorship errors that were described in Article I, the amount of chat perusal required from the server moderators has not reduced with the addition of this chat expurgation. The innumerable methods by which players can outwit the sanitation of server confabulation makes it necessary for moderators to scrupulously survey interactions between players as a means of ensuring that the precious censor remains adhered to. Such effort greatly contradicts the supposed primary benefit of the censor: reduced demand for moderator attention. That being said, moderator activity has not changed in lieu of this addition, which leads one to presume that a circumnavigation of the censor is neither reprimandable nor discouraged. Why is a censor necessary if there are no repercussions for evading it? Even if punishments were inflicted for such transgressions, the censor’s substandard abilities would give rise to greater responsibility for the moderators of MCME.

Article III - Age of Tolkien fans
While there would be many benefits from censoring foul language in a server designed for children, the downsides of the censor are much more potent than the benefits of said censor in a setting where the vast majority of people are old enough to handle a few bad words. MCME falls within this particularization, because one can easily deduce that a minuscule number of juveniles join the network. Tolkien’s works are constructed at a high level of comprehension, and the movie adaptations of his novels portray a multitude of violent events unbefitting of younger audiences. MCME should not pander towards the needs of an audience that purportedly composes less than 1% of the Tolkien fandom, especially when such actions resultantly wound a majority of MCME associates.

Article IV - Problem with censor improvement
Hypothetically, the censor could be optional, turned on and off with a command. However, the amount of work required to implement such a feature would be staggering, and it would pull from much more important developmental needs. Since any work done to the censor would only benefit an insignificant portion of the player base, it is likely that other projects should be prioritized. Thus, the foremost option at this moment is to undergo a complete removal of the censor from the server.

Section 3: The Lack of Transparency From Management

Article I - Notifying the community
This post has covered a series of concerns relating to the MCME chat censor. However, it is prudent that the fundamental issue with the censor receives proper divulgence. For undisclosed reasons, MCME Management failed to inform the community about the possibility of a new component of the server that would suppress the words of its members and limit their ability to communicate. Such a sizable update to the server deserves adequate contemplation from the entire active player base. These players are the ones who endure the ramifications of any change within MCME. Thus, the implementation of the chat censor, without regard for the opinion of the community, portrays an image of MCME Management that is disrespectful, cynical, and tyrannical. Management would do well to share future ideas with the people of MCME before imposing such ludicrous incorporations as the chat censor.

Conclusion
The MCME chat censor effectuates a series of issues that deface the pulchritudinous world of Minecraft Middle Earth. It forcefully limits creative expression and damages project advancement, ultimately mistreating the precious members of MCME. A myriad of complications plague the efficacy of the censor, so more problems come from it than solutions. This, consequently, supports the claim that the censor does not strengthen the server. Accordingly, the community will be most displeased if Management fails to recognize and act upon the undeniable truths presented within this post. I encourage everyone to respond to this post with your opinion on the chat censor.

If anything this response demonstrates the lack of creativity that you have in formulating a valid counter argument that does not include insulting the other party.
I just noticed a pattern in your complaints about it hindering creativity and that not really making sense with the actual effect we know hard limits have on creativity, and extrapollated an argument from there. If I really just would resort to insults, I would argue your arguments were stupid because 'you are all 'big stupid dumdums', but I didn't do that, because I don't hold that opinion. So at least try to engage with my post in a mature way instead of strawmanning.

First, a chat filter isn’t about shielding players from reality but it’s about upholding a standard of respect and accessibility. Yes, profanity exists online, and a lot of people, including younger ones, encounter it regularly. But that doesn’t mean we should replicate the internet's behavior on MCME. Just because swearing is common it doesn’t mean it’s ideal or constructive. Many people want to enjoy the server without having exposure to "bad" language. A censor helps create a space that's more welcoming. If you really need profanity to express strong ideas it only demonstrates a lack of skill in language as there are many other respectful ways of presenting your opinion or goal.

The censor has a couple of issues but that doesn't mean we need to remove it. Instead we should work on it to make it better
This, consequently, supports the claim that the censor does not strengthen the server.
Using profanity does not strengthen the server so...

Overall a better solution would be to not use profane language (or to have it near zero) on the server as this would create a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone.

In this short post, I would like to briefly address some arguments that have been raised repeatedly.
  1. It is absolutely correct that freedom of speech is a fundamental right. No one is disputing this. However, we must also take into account that many players may be significantly younger than even the community survey suggests, as a particularly large number of the younger and less community-active players are unlikely to have participated in the survey. In this context, it can hardly be considered a restriction of free speech to force older players to behave more maturely toward younger ones and avoid bad language in their communication.

  2. The claim that chat censorship is hindering progress on the server is ridiculous. With only one exception, I am not aware of any case in which a previously active Member has become more inactive due to the censorship. On the contrary, I recall numerous interactions with other builders that functioned smoothly despite the chat filter, and many projects have made significant progress in the past weeks, despite the censoring.

  3. Even if a majority of the community does not support the chat filter, this is not a sufficient reason to abolish it. The issue is not whether
the majority is comfortable with profanity, but rather about protecting a minority from such negative influences. A similar principle applies to bullying: just because the majority is unaffected does not mean it should be tolerated. And although offensive language is widespread across the internet, MCME should not be a place where such language is encouraged.
Overall, while I agree that some words such as “shit” or “kill” should be removed from the filter and others added. It seems evident that the argument claiming these words are essential for communication has, in fact, been refuted by many of those who voiced it, with Greencaver's post being a great example of expressing ones opinion without using profanity.

Has this ever been an issue that parents have complained about our server on account of language?

This issue is created where one did not exist before

Put down a sign at spawn that says you can do /leave global if you are uncomfortable with in game messaging features without having backstabbed the community that has been using said features for years.

'community not supporting it not good enough reason to remove it'
hogwash

Also saying the server has been progressing is cap, no job in seven weeks and dead af American hours

What's happened is someone at the top made a unilateral decision on something that affects every long term user of this server without considering the ramifications on the people and white knights jump onto it with either condescending snootiness or ad hominems.
Cmon man

I very much support what Ocean and Luke have said: what this boils down to is the culture we want on MCME.

There's plenty of profanity on discord (an age protected environment) voice chats as it is, so I very much struggle to see why this is needed/wanted in-game text chat as well, when people simultaneously say it's not happening much in-game anyway. Yes, some adjustment is needed to the plugin as others have said, but as demonstrated in my next comment below: it isn't hindering people doing things.

D3 in the last week or so has been making textures for me to use in Mordor. Orruss was busy finishing off some areas of A&U yesterday. Luke has been finishing parts of A&U. I was pasting trees in A&U yesterday evening to help there, and working on Dagorlad concepts earlier in the week. So plainly progress towards finishing at least one project is happening.

The idea that you're using "the community wants this" after persistently being against the idea of some form of community choice on projects for MCME (see community survey outputs) or a roadmap that some members of the community would like is a very interesting choice to make.

It's exam time. Of course the server is quieter than normal. This happens every single year.

Also saying the server has been progressing is cap, no job in seven weeks and dead af American hours
What's your argument here? No jobs = no progress?

Just because no jobs are currently being run doesn’t mean there’s no progress on the server. Most jobs were more about involving other players in ongoing projects than about actually accelerating progress, especially since many of the tasks could be done much more easily using WE. I agree that it’s unfortunate no jobs have been run in recent weeks, but as Stephen has shown, neither active jobs nor high activity during American hours are necessary for progress to happen on the server.

No it's never this dead. Through a combination of lack of interest from established members and our choice not to pursue streamers there is like the lowest amount of interest in the server I've seen in five years. Mark my words anorien will still be a project this time next year. Each time I've logged on it's been less than 6 people on lately.

Unlike projects which necessitate a build team and leader commiting large amounts of time and creative vision, chat is used by everyone and everyone can have say on it. So in such a case where the effects of a decision affect leadership and the people contributing to a project more than the random commoner who logs on three times a year and wants erebor, the decision is made by the people actually building the project. I have had this argument more times than I have fingers so I won't go farther than that. Very different things and a poor comparison to make

I see people making this as a bigger issue than it actually is. I agree that the chat filter can be annoying at times, especially because it can't understand context unlike Mods, but I don't think that it would effect server productivity and player retention. Also because, as already said those kind of words can be used on Discord like in the past (as long as they don't become too much and Mods have to get involved).

The only reason why the filter has been implemented is due to the fact that Mojang has asked us to do so. I personally think that Mod Team was doing a good job and that players were not too exposed to profanity before. I have seen what having a too strict moderation on MCME meant and as it created some useless drama within the community it's not something we want to revive. We have tried to check other alternatives such us a command to toggle the filter on and off and disabling it for /msg and local chat, but as it's not a custom MCME plugin those solution would require too much work for Eriol.

So the easier solution that will be taken is to review the filter list and delete words such as "kill", "racist", "shit", "fuck", which are not too severe and keep the worse ones.

I hope this clarifies a bit on the matter.

It is a tragedy that peoples first visits to this glorious server have recently become mired in profanities by the very active and thrilling mature Minecraft chat that MCME provides to its members. I still remember as a young boy myself joining this server, excited to see Hobbiton, Rivendell, Helms Deep but instead my eyes were barraged by a US led bombing of foul, indescribable, slurs. My brain was scarred, traumatised by the speech that I did not myself understand. I spent many nights in my bed, having lucid dreams of strange Minecraft text that floated across my head, my room went red, my brain cried in pain, I started to shudder and sweat, how could people talk like this, how could people get away with this on a respected Middle Earth Minecraft server. These words, who invented them?! Why would people ever use them?! AGHHH~, the next day I told my parents of these words and in an instant they fell to their knees and wailed. They could not believe that their innocent gamer son had stumbled onto such a dangerous community on the internet. I was grounded and my PC was kicked out of the second floor window. It took me a long time to recover in rehab and because of that my Minas Tirith house plot build that week was delayed and never added to the city and I never got my desired commoner rank, very sad.

Therefore to stamp out the risk of harming a future generation of MCME gamers, I genuinely think the only people that should be able to communicate via the server chat nowadays are moderators and guides. After all they are the most trusted in safeguarding the innocence of our MCME Under 18 community and would never abuse that power. Never.

If MCME wants to progress and protect then it is time we remove these slur bandits for good and eradicate all unnecessary chat. It is time to ban all speech...
