Can I please point out that, according to my History teacher, Tolkien based alot of his works on real-life places. That may explain some of these places.....

Well, most of his inspiration came from England and the Alps...The mountain of Monch (basis for Caradhras/Redhorn) even has red rock!

Also, much of his works (especially the Hobbit) were based on Norse Mythology
