Most of these screenshots are not done in the main server. We had a cinematic server at one point that allowed us to open the render distances up all the way. That's how I achieved the Minias Tirith shots. I don't use shaders because my computer can't handle them and Minecraft will refuse to work instead I use light, weather, terrain, and the optifine night sky to get the desired effect.
