Art Event: #Tolkientober

Hello artists! (and we don't mean the rank) It's October and by modern artist tradition, that means Inktober! But as a true LOTR community, let's go ahead and do #Tolkientober Following a list of #Tolkientober art prompts from Twitter user @hobbitgay, we're inviting you to post your Tolkientober submissions in this thread! Whether it's a sketch, calligraphy, a comic, a cartoon, a painting, a render, lineart, or paper art! Feel free to do any prompt and any day. Post as many as your art skills can allow. Let's fill October with Tolkien art! On the other hand, you can use the official Inktober 2020 prompt list and Tolkien-ify it

What will you artists get? As much as possible, we will post your creations among our various social media channels (with permission and due credits of course).

At the end of October, we'll be selecting highlights from the #Tolkientober forum thread to feature in the MCME Times. We hope to see your stuff soon! Happy creating <3

INKTOBER, Day 1: FISH
My subject is FASTITOCALON, the legendary turtle-fish of hobbit lore, whose poem is found in The Adventures of Tom Bombadil.

Fastitocalon

Look, there is Fastitocalon!
An island good to land upon,
Although ’tis rather bare.
Come, leave the sea! And let us run,
Or dance, or lie down in the sun!
See, gulls are sitting there!
Beware!
Gulls do not sink.
There they may sit, or strut and prink:
Their part it is to tip the wink,
If anyone should dare
Upon that isle to settle,
Or only for a while to get
Relief from sickness or the wet,
Or maybe boil a kettle.
Ah! foolish folk, who land on him,
And little fires proceed to trim
And hope perhaps for tea!
It may be that His shell is thick,
He seems to sleep; but He is quick,
And floats now in the sea
With guile;
And when He hears their tapping feet,
Or faintly feels the sudden heat,
With smile
He dives,
And promptly turning upside-down
He tips them off, and deep they drown,
And lose their silly lives
To their surprise.
Be wise!
There are many monsters in the Sea,
But none so perilous as he,
Old horny Fastitocalon,
Whose mighty kindred all have gone,
The last of the old Turtle-fish.
So if to save your life you wish
Then I advise:
Pay heed to sailors’ ancient lore,
Set foot on no uncharted shore!
Or better still,
Your days at peace on Middle-earth
In mirth
Fulfil!

I went for a wisp of pipe smoke for this one, with a classic view of STRIDER in the Prancing Pony.

INKTOBER Day 3: BULKY
So many options, but a STONE TROLL was an obvious choice.

INKTOBER, Day 4: RADIO
Of course, there's no such thing as radio in Middle-earth. But a PALANTIR is the next best thing.

I'm sure STING was a common choice for this one. I wish I'd had time to draw the Tengwar lettering and the sheathe. Another time, perhaps.

INKTOBER Day 6: RODENT
This is my version of BILL FERNY. Timothy Spall has that great rodent look, and Bill Ferny is the biggest rat in Bree. So here you are.

INKTOBER, Day 7: FANCY
I think Galadriel's Elven Ring NENYA encapsulates every meaning of this word.

INKTOBER, Day 8: TEETH
This is the terrible maw of CARCHAROTH, the most powerful wolf to ever live, whose teeth bit off Beren's hand, still holding the captured Silmaril.

INKTOBER, Day 9: THROW
This is SAMWISE GAMGEE, throwing an apple at Bill Ferny before leaving Bree. 'With a sudden flick, quick as lightning, an apple left his hand and hit Bill square on the nose.'
